As we depend more and more on digital information for so many tasks in every part of our daily lives, the need for effective computer security is more important than ever, and high quality Virtual Private Networks are at the top of the list of tools for that protection.VPR encrypts all data from your PC or mobile, sends it through your service’s servers, and it is handled with an extra protection layer of anonymity and encryption before it’s sent out over the open web. There are many VPN services, but VyprVPN was listed at the #1 favorite service by Lifehacker readers in 2011.
VyprVPN is a Virtual Private Network service provided by Golden Frog , with its headquarters located in Switzerland, Golden Frog purports a threefold philosophy: caring about the internet and its truest potential, designing top of the line service and software, and a deep respect for customers and their privacy.
VyprVPN was created in 2009. The product’s tagline is “VPN without Restrictions,” based on their unlimited speed, IP addresses, ability to switch servers, and unrestricted bandwidth.
- Access by PPTP, L2TP or OpenVPN Depending on Service Level
- Servers available in the United States, Asia, Europe, Oceania, Africa and the Americas
- Support for Linux, Windows, and Mac
- Secure iPad, iPhone, and Android access
- VPN access configured manually
- Disguises IP to break through censorship or Web site restrictions.
- Protects your activity even from your ISP, helping prevent data throttling
- Prevents hacking by encrypting all information
VyprVPN offers two levels of pricing for the consumer, based on the service package offered. The VyprVPN premium benefit level costs $12.95 per month ($45 annually), and includes PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, Openvpn 160/250, Nat firewall, vyprDNS and Chameleon vyprvpn protocol
Standard service is priced at $12.95 per month, and offers PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, vyprDNS ,Nat firewall and Openvpn 160/250
NAT (Network Access Translation) Firewall, an important additional service that protects the user from unwanted connections taking advantage of network weaknesses when they are online. This kind of added protection is especially important for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, which don’t have firewalls built in to their operating systems.
Both VyprVPN plans allow use of unlimited speed without any pre-defined limits or caps. Clients can switch between servers to maintain a consistent pace. Customers are also allowed unlimited access to the company’s pool of IP addresses, and since Golden Frog owns its servers and maintains its own network, VyprVPN clients are assured privacy for their data usage from their end to its ultimate destination and back.
The VyprVPN Premium service level offers PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, Openvpn 160/250 and Chemeleon protocol while the standard VyprVPN service provides access to PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, Openvpn 160/250
Customer support is provided for VyprVPN customers 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, offering expert help any time the user needs it. Golden Frog says its “engineers can help you optimize your settings, reroute traffic, and more.” Support is available by email, live online chat, or online email form, but no support phone number appears on the website outside the member area.
VyprVPN is a month to month product with no long term contract for full access independent of which plan you choose. Sign up includes a 3 days free trial, no questions asked.
Speed, Traffic & Bandwidth
VyprVPN is touted as possessing “the fastest VPN speeds in the world.” They explain this by claiming a focus on optimization. Rather than outsourcing their data to other server companies, they utilize their own hardware and manage their own networks, allowing them to keep traffic moving at maximum speed.
The company doesn’t provide numbers for its traffic or average bandwidth usage, although VyprVPN doesn’t restrict access to the speed of its servers. Users and reviewers such as PC Magazine who tested the product found that “on average downloads through the VPN took twice as long as those with no VPN.” Vpnsp.com gave more specific numbers after testing VyprVPN: their baseline download speed of 40.56 Mbps was reduced to 22.24 Mbps when using VpyrVPN in the United States, and 17.92 Mbps internationally.
VyprVPN can be set up and used on laptops, desktops, iPads, iPhones, iPod Touch, and Android mobile devices. However, only a single device can be connected to the service at a time.
Android, iOS, MacOSX, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Linux are all supported by VyprVPN.
One issue users may encounter is that internet service provider may not permit sending email through a POP3/SMTP account when using the VPN connection. Many ISP’s only allow connections through their own outgoing SMTP servers from local network IP addresses.
While VyprVPN might show some weaknesses when it comes to speed, amenities, and price, it is also known among VPN users to be one of the most effective, and therefore remains popular. Golden Frog explains to PC Magazine that their complete control over VyprVPN servers all but guarantees client security. They also say that their speed should be assured because they “we control network routes.” VyprVPN also offers two levels of encryption, and compared to other VPN services, the loss of bandwidth and network speed is far less when compared to other services.
